Tony and Rachel

Even though we live in the suburbs, we still want to be able to reach and maintain a certain level of self-sustainability, growing food, and raising ducks for eggs.

Entertaining the idea of a suburban homestead was always something we wanted to do.  Even though we don't have a huge amount of space, we feel with today's technology this goal is attainable not just for us, but for anyone.

Our daughter Samantha is your typical pre-teen.  And as she has gotten older we feel that it's important for her to know where her food comes from and the work involved in gardening and sustaining a suburban homestead.

Though getting her into the garden to participate has been a little bit of a challenge.

THE DUCKS

Tony and Rachel

THE DUCKS

We have three Welsh Harlequin ducks named Gemma, Genevieve, and Giselle.  We hope to share our experiences with them as they grow up and begin to lay eggs.  They are now old enough to free range in our suburban backyard homestead during the day which they are thoroughly enjoying.

We should have named him Frisbee, because that is all he wants to do.

Don't let that innocent face fool you.  Lizards and insects stand no chance.  She has saved us from many a cockroach.
